Custom Kitchen Remodel

This full-service interior design kitchen remodel in Concord, Massachusetts reimagines the heart of an 1850s historic home with ties to Henry David Thoreau. The goal was to create a kitchen that feels fresh, airy, and nature-inspired, while remaining deeply connected to the home’s history and natural surroundings. The result is a space that balances modern function with timeless charm, offering a sense of calm, warmth, and quiet beauty.

Rooted in a palette of soft, light tones and organic materials, the design embraces a layered approach -- combining natural textures, clean finishes, and subtle modern details to create a kitchen that feels open, serene, and inviting. Thoughtful updates to the cabinetry, a transition from gas to an induction cooktop range, and a reworked layout improved flow and functionality while maintaining the home’s character and meeting current building standards.

One of the most transformative moments in the project was reimagining the original pantry. What had been a shallow closet with bifold doors was removed entirely and replaced with a custom-designed pantry crafted from rich, warm plain-sawn oak. Designed to feel more like a freestanding piece of furniture similar to a traditional hutch, it adds depth, character, and a sense of permanence to the space. Thoughtfully detailed, the cabinetry also discreetly conceals the microwave, blending modern function seamlessly into the historic aesthetic.

This kitchen was fully redesigned with new wood flooring, semi-custom cabinetry, updated appliances, fixtures, and lighting, along with a custom range hood and Italian marble surfaces that add refinement and texture. Despite the home’s modest footprint, the space feels light, spacious, and effortlessly cozy, proving that a historic kitchen can be both highly functional and beautifully understated.
